Fourteen arrests during first week of summer drink drive campaign

Police in Gloucestershire have arrested 14 people during the first week of the annual Summer Drink Drive Campaign.

The campaign started on June 1 and officers have been carrying out increased traffic patrols and road side checks on drivers, as well as targeting repeat offenders and drivers reported by the public.

Breath tests are also being carried out on every driver involved in a collision, regardless of whether or not they are suspected of drink driving.

Those arrested during the first week of the campaign include: A 17-year-old male believed to have been driving a car which collided with a house in Mitcheldean in the early hours of Saturday June 6. He will appear at Gloucester Youth Court on June 18 charged with drink driving.

A 43-year-old man from Moreton-in-Marsh arrested while driving on the A40, shortly after 5am on June 6. He will appear at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on June 19 charged with drink driving.

A 39-year-old Dursley man arrested while driving in Kingshill Road, Dursley, at 11.30pm on June 6. He will appear at Stroud Magistrates Court on June 17 charged with drink driving.

A 66-year-old Gloucester man arrested while driving in Upton Street, Gloucester, at shortly after 1am on June 7. He will appear at Gloucester Magistrates Court on June 23 charged with drink driving and other motoring offences.

A 22-year-old Gloucester man arrested while driving in Hucclecote Road, Gloucester, at 2.30am on June 7. He will appear at Gloucester Magistrates Court on June 17 charged with drink driving and other motoring offences.

A 39-year-old man from Stroud, arrested while driving in Cainscross Road, Stroud, at around 4am on June 7. He will appear at Stroud Magistrates Court on June 17 charged with drink driving.

The others arrested include three women, and arrests were also made in Cheltenham, Cirencester and Tewkesbury.

Four of those arrested are on police bail while a further four people failed roadside breath tests but were then under the drink drive limit when they were tested within police custody.

Inspector David Collicott, Road Safety and Traffic Management Inspector for Gloucestershire Constabulary, said: “The consequences of being caught drink driving can be severe, as each of the drivers we have charged with drink driving during the first week of the campaign will soon find out.

“They are all facing a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

“There may also be further financial or social consequences, such as losing their job or relationship.

“We would advise anyone planning on driving not to drink any alcohol at all, as research shows that even one drink can impair your driving – motorists just shouldn’t take the risk.

“If you are going out for a drink this summer then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely and without having to drive yourself. Take simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation.

“I’d also urge the public not to get into a vehicle if you think the driver has been drinking.”

Book a Cheltenham Taxi

Inspector Collicott added: “We would rather prevent a problem arising so ask the public to let us know of people who they suspect are driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Use the 0845 090 1234 or Crimestopper 0800 111555 lines, or if they are actually driving by dialling 999, so that officers can intercept the vehicle.”

Members of the public can also call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 or the Gloucestershire Constabulary non emergency line on 0845 090 1234.

The drink drive campaign runs until June 30.

The Conservative Party’s Spring Forum gets under way tomorrow and the town’s hotels are already filling up in advance of the big event.

The forum is taking place at The Centaur conference building at Cheltenham racecourse and is expected to give a £1 million lift to the town’s economy.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson will also host a convention dinner tomorrow night.

Mr Cameron, who will deliver his speech on Sunday, is expected to heavily criticise Chancellor Alistair Darling’s Budget and again call for a General Election.

Mark Coote, Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Cheltenham, said: “This is a big coup for Cheltenham. We are already known as a festival town, this can help get us on the map as a conference venue.

“Many of the hotels in the town are full, which will deliver an extra boost to the hospitality industry.

“On a political level it will be fantastic to see the national news agenda being dictated from Cheltenham.”

Mr Coote said that the cost of policing the event was being picked up by the Tory Party, meaning there would be no cost to taxpayers for policing the event.

Sue Adie, from Cheltenham Tourism, said: “Politics aside, it is great news for the town to have so many visitors over a weekend. The hotels are bustling.”

Martin Quantock, town centre manager, said: “This forum is a big boost to the town and is great for all different types of businesses.”

Nick Fisher, vice-chairman of the Cheltenham Hackney Carriage Drivers’ Association, said: “With so many visitors to the town we are very hopeful that we will see an increase in trade over the course of the weekend .”

Other top Tories expected to attend the event include former party leader William Hague and former Chancellor Ken Clarke.

Potholes Will Not be Repaired!

Potholes and road damage caused by the extreme winter weather could be left un-repaired for months, a highways chief has admitted.

Heavy snow and rainfall during January and February left some of the county’s roads in dire condition, posing a hazard to motorists and pedest- rians.

Gloucestershire County Council committed £500,000 to spend on repairs with Coun Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment, calling for patience whilst work was undertaken.

But it now looks as if residential roads may be left to deteriorate further after a Gloucestershire Highways boss admitted prioritising the worst hit areas meant less-used roads will be left out.

Prestbury is one of the areas where roads have been particularly badly hit, and residents have been calling for improve- ments to be made.

Stephen Burden, Gloucestershire Highways area manager for Cheltenham, was at a parish council meeting on Monday, and left residents in disbelief when he said some of the village’s roads were not busy enough to be given high priority.

He told the meeting: “Due to the freezing cold weather during the winter, the condition of some of the road surfaces has worsened. But with the resources and funding available we have to concentrate on repairing the more well-used roads first.

“Unfortunately this may mean we have to leave the quieter residential roads for the time being.”

Gloucestershire County Council said it prioritised repairs on routes which were deemed ‘dangerous’, as well as main roads and those near the town centre.

But residential roads such as Fir Tree Close in Prestbury, which has suffered notable deterioration and has potholes more than two inches deep, are not on the list.

Mr Burden admitted: “At this time I cannot say when Fir Tree Close will be repaired. Although it may have deteriorated lately, if it is deemed to be safe then we have to prioritise other, busier areas.”

Coun David Prince, county councillor for Oakley, Pittville and Prestbury, said: “While I have the greatest respect for Mr Burden, I’m not happy with the answers he’s given.

“The holes in Fir Tree Close are well over 40mm which is supposed to be the acceptable limit, and it is going to get worse. I understand the need to prioritise main roads, but I think this is unacceptable.

“Just how bad does a road have to get before anything will be done about it?

“Some money needs to be pumped into improving the county’s road network and it needs to happen soon.”

Parish Council chairman Malcolm Stennett added: “We realise we cannot pin Gloucestershire Highways down for every little detail, but we want to know when the condition of our roads will improve.”

The county council said Gloucestershire Highways has repaired about 1,300 potholes a week since the cold snap, and that the county’s roads are improving as a result.

Big cars tend to go fewer miles because they burn up more gas. Small car owners buy gas less frequently because the small cars are designed to burn gas at a slow rate and give greater miles. Why should you continue to take the very long routes to work or take those routes that always have traffic jams? If you really want to save gas, then you should take shorter routes or those that don’t have traffic jams. The time you spend in traffic jams result in unnecessary use of gas. If you can avoid it, don’t take long routes and don’t get stuck in traffic.
