Knowing things like the local currency and customs before you travel will help you avoid any problems you may encounter while on vacation. Being a tourist is nice, but knowing something about the location you’re visiting helps you chat with locals and find out where the best spots are for shopping, entertainment and the arts and culture.

Travel is for those with a spirit of adventure, a sense of excitement of what may be in store for them around the next corner in some far-flung land. The adventures that await you may be filled with wonderful things; sights you have never seen before, people with a different way of life and – yes – you do need to take some precautions in strange places.

Really, you need to plan to NOT drink local water and instead rely on other sources for the duration of your trip. This means not brushing your teeth with tap water or having a drink with ice cubes in it. Isn’t that one of the last things you’d think about when being handed a tall cool glass on a blistering hot day? Better safe than sorry though.

Check for the types of foods eaten, local religious days, and customs relating to animals in the streets, siesta times and other idiosyncrasies so you “fit in” when you’re vacationing.
